Big Hero 6 is set in the fictional city of San Fransokyo, which is described as "a high-tech metropolis where the future has arrived." Hiro Hamada is a 14-year-old robotics genius who lives in the city with his aunt Cass and older brother Tadashi. Tadashi attends the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology (SFIT) where he studies robotics under Professor Robert Callaghan.

One evening, Hiro visits Tadashi at SFIT and witnesses one of his inventions: Baymax, a medical robot programmed to provide healthcare and emotional support. After a fire breaks out at SFIT, Tadashi rushes in to save Callaghan but is killed in the process.

Distraught over his brother's death, Hiro withdraws into himself and stops attending school. Baymax finds Hiro and, upon activation, deduces that Hiro is sad and in need of medical attention. Hiro then activates Baymax's "cuddle mode", and the two bond as Hiro grieves for his brother.

Hiro later discovers that someone has been stealing microbots—tiny robots that can be controlled by a user's thoughts—that he created. He eventually discovers that Professor Callaghan was the thief; Callaghan plans to use the microbots to take revenge on the people who fired him from SFIT years ago.

Hiro then creates a superhero team consisting of himself, Baymax, Tadashi's friends Go Go Tomago, Wasabi, Honey Lemon, and Fred. The team uses their various abilities—Hiro's microbot control, Baymax's strength and flight, Go Go's speed and agility, Wasabi's laser-like precision, Honey Lemon's chemical knowledge, and Fred's passion for superheroics—to stop Callaghan.
